About

Why we identify and refuse to appraise

Patina started from a narrow observation: what collectors ask for at the table is not a price, it is a name. Who made this, roughly when, and where from. The moment a tool starts guessing dollar values it has to be right about a market, a condition grade and a buyer, and it will be confidently wrong in ways that cost someone real money. So we drew the line early and built on the useful side of it. Patina reads the mark, gives you maker, era and origin in plain language with a stated confidence level, and when it cannot see enough to be useful it says so and hands you toward a vetted appraiser instead. That restraint is the product. It keeps the tool honest, it keeps appraisers as partners rather than rivals, and it means the answer you get is something you can weigh against what you already know, which is usually quite a lot.

The problem

Between an appraisal and a guess, there is nothing

A professional appraisal is thorough, and it is also commonly quoted in the two to five hundred dollar range per item, with days of waiting attached. General image search is free and instant, and it cannot read a maker's mark, an assay stamp or a style period at any useful depth. So most finds get decided by gut feel at the table, with the seller waiting and the queue moving. Patina is built for that moment: enough domain knowledge to name what is in front of you, and enough honesty to tell you when the answer is worth paying a person for.
